Proud Halo Supplier – A Milestone for Safety in Formula Racing

Since 2011, the FIA has researched solutions under the term Additional Frontal Protection to better safeguard drivers, continually striving to enhance motorsport safety. After analyzing several accidents and intensive testing of various concepts – including the Shield and Aeroscreen – the Halo prevailed. Unlike other solutions, it can deflect flying debris such as a wheel at speeds of up to 225 km/h.

Following controversial debates and extensive testing, the FIA decided to make the Halo mandatory starting in the 2018 season. This left CP Tech GmbH with just six weeks to complete final development, production, and testing. Critical to this success was our material expertise, particularly in the complex processing of titanium, enabling the Halo to withstand extreme loads of 12.5 metric tons (comparable to the weight of a double-decker bus). Additionally, the Halo had to be manufactured with extreme precision, adhering to tight weight and geometry tolerances – essential as it functions as an integrated part of the monocoque safety structure.

Since its introduction, the Halo has made a significant contribution to improving safety in Formula racing. From Formula 1 to Formula 2, Formula E, and other racing series, it has become an indispensable component of motorsport and a symbol of continuous innovation in driver safety.
